The Courtville story begins in 1952 in county Tipperary, Ireland when Katherine “Kitten” Pierse decided to share her collection of unique antique treasures with friends in her garden chalet. Her passion and knowledge of these pieces became public knowledge and soon she had an influx of locals requesting various antique jewellery items. As demand grew, Kitten’s daughter Grainne assisted her in sourcing these rare and valuable gems for their clientele and a partnership was formed.
In 1982 when Powerscourt Townhouse was converted into a Boutique shopping complex in the centre of Dublin, Grainne believed this charming Georgian building was the ideal location to expand her growing business. Keeping true to her roots, Grainne named the ‘corner jewellery shop’ Courtville after her mother’s garden chalet in Tipperary. Over the next three decades, Grainne’s expertise and eye for quality gained an unmatched reputation which has solidified Courtville as an authority in vintage and antique wares. In 2018 Grainne handed over the reins to another antique enthusiast with a passion for curiosities. Matthew Weldon continues the rich legacy of Courtville, left behind by Kitten and Grainne.
Delve into the Weldon family tree and you will see a rich history of Irish jewellers going back over 135 years. Learning from a young age about the industry from his father, Matthew quickly gained a skilled eye and an appreciation for quality. Seeking to further his knowledge and expertise, Matthew gained a degree in marketing and French which lead to a short career as a chartered accountant. But with such a draw to antique and vintage jewellery, it was inevitable that Matthew would continue the family tradition and build a business of his own.
Just like all the generations before, Matthew looks for exceptional, rare and intriguing pieces, always ensuring beauty, quality and fair prices. With Matthew’s understanding of today’s market, he is determined to deliver a reliable presence both online and in-store. Relationships are the soul of the business, and Matthew ensures that face to face clients receive excellent service and aftercare. For the wider international clients, Courtville is active on social media platforms, email and FaceTime to deliver the same high standard of customer service across the globe.
